Master of Social Work (MSW) – Advanced Standing Track Overview
Campbellsville University’s CSWE-accredited advanced standing curriculum prepares you for graduate-level social work licensure, allowing you to provide direct client services under the supervision of an appropriately licensed social worker.
Our accelerated program equips you with advanced social work skills and knowledge to work at the individual, family, group, community and global levels of practice. The curriculum covers practice with families and groups, psychopathology, leadership skills and ethics across all levels of social work practice. As a student, you may pursue the generalist degree or opt to customize your MSW with a clinical, substance use disorder or faith-based area of focus.
Generalist
The generalist program prepares you for the graduate-level social work licensure necessary to provide direct client services under the supervision of an appropriately licensed social worker. You’ll explore various topics, including psychopathology and ethics, and complete the program fully prepared for diverse opportunities within the field working with individuals, families or groups.
Clinical Area of Focus
The clinical area of focus prepares you for a graduate-level license to practice clinical social work under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker. You will study psychopharmacology, change theory and theories of social work practice. This area of focus is ideal for students who want to work in mental health settings.
Substance Use Disorder Area of Focus
The substance use disorder area of focus prepares you for a graduate-level license to practice clinical substance abuse social work and clinical drug and alcohol counseling under the supervision of a licensed social worker. The curriculum is designed by practitioners who are experts in substance abuse treatment. Courses include topics like psychopharmacology, change theory and addictions.
Faith-Based Area of Focus
Taught from a justice perspective that honors the dignity and worth of all persons, you’ll learn how to integrate faith ethically in all components of social work practice. Selecting this focus area means your placement will be in a nonprofit program, organization or project that identifies as faith-based in the name or mission statement. You’ll work under the supervision of a leader with an MSW degree and at least two years of post-degree experience.
Forensic Area of Focus (Coming soon!)
The forensic area of focus is designed for those interested in social work careers related to corrections and working with offender populations. Consisting of nine credits, the curriculum emphasizes empowerment, human rights and social justice along with dedicated courses in conflict resolution and substance use disorder treatment. You’ll gain the theoretical and practical expertise to pursue a range of roles in forensic social work, case management and more.
Who Is The Online Advanced Standing Program For?

“The social work program has inspired me to do more good in my community. I am a care coordinator for the county I live in and some of the tools I learn in classes I can take to my current job.”
– Curtis Newcome, MSW
