Certificate – School Counseling Overview
Campbellsville University’s online school counseling certificate helps you develop the skills and tools that education administrators are seeking in new school leaders. The program’s instruction goes beyond traditional graduate programs and focuses more on advanced learning. It additionally allows those who have a 48-credit-hour master’s degree and a provisional certification in school counseling to earn a standard certification. The fully online certification is also rooted in Christian values and was created by the same doctorate-holding faculty members who teach our master’s in school guidance counseling program.
While completing the certificate’s coursework, you will examine areas that are fundamental for school counseling, including education law and ethics. You’ll study school counselor accountability, crisis prevention and intervention practices. In addition, you will learn theories, methods and techniques related to counseling and psychotherapy with children and adolescents.
After graduating, you will be able to pursue a career in as a school counselor to help develop students’ social and academic skills so that they can succeed in school. You will consult with the parents or guardians of students, school staff and the community to ensure there is a conducive environment to help students achieve academic success. Additionally, you may help students discover their career path and point them in the right direction so they can reach their goals.
Our online school counseling certificate does not require a teaching certification. Campbellsville University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Campbellsville’s education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and are approved by the Education Professional Standards Board of Kentucky (EPSB) for teacher education and certification. Admissions Requirements
In order to apply to Campbellsville University’s accredited online school counseling certificate, prospective students must submit or complete the following:
- Complete the online application
- Official Transcripts
- 2.75 overall GPA from the last completed degree
- Master’s degree in School Guidance Counseling that contains at least 48 hours worth of counseling work
- One page rationale essay
*Some additional requirements will be requested upon acceptance into the program.
Costs & Financial Aid
The online school counseling certificate costs $310 per credit hour. In order to help students afford their education, Campbellsville University’s staff is available to work with students to discover available financial aid options.
Students can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out what scholarships, grants, loans and payment plans are available for them. There are numerous options available, and not all financial aid is based on need.
Students can transfer a maximum of nine credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university.

In addition, the BLS states that school counselors in elementary and secondary schools earned more than those employed at colleges and universities.
